Additional Energy Services

Request for a Meter Test

If you request your meter to be checked for accuracy, the cooperative will require that you pay a small advance deposit. If your meter is found to be correct, you will have to forfeit the deposit. If the meter is faulty, your deposit will be refunded and your account will be adjusted.

The cooperative considers your meter to be correct when it falls within plus or minus 2 percent of 100 percent accuracy. Meters, especially older ones, are more apt to be slow than to be fast.

Regardless of the results of your meter test, the cooperative will provide you with a written report.

Meter Seals

The cooperative seals meters to protect you from electrical hazards and to prevent the tampering of its equipment. Only cooperative linemen and experienced electricians are allowed to break the seal and remove the meter.

Electricians should contact the cooperative office for permission to break a seal. However, they are not permitted to reseal the meter. Only cooperative servicemen can check the service and reseal the meter.

If you find your meter seal broken, call the cooperative immediately so your meter can be resealed.

Electrical Wiring Information

All electric wiring beyond the meter, including the service entrance, is your property and your responsibility. However, the installation must comply with the National Electrical Safety Code and the Cooperative Wiring Specifications. Wiring books are available free from Howard Electric Cooperative.
